We build on both platforms, so we can afford honesty: neither 'wins'. Here's the decision framework we walk every client through — cost, control, conversion and the mistakes that actually hurt.

This article exists because most comparisons are written by affiliates. We build on Shopify and WooCommerce every month, and the truthful answer remains: the platform is rarely what makes or breaks the store. The team behind it does. That said, they fit different businesses.

Where Shopify wins

  • Selling is solved — checkout, payments, taxes, PCI compliance, uptime. You're renting a machine that never calls you at 3am.
  • Speed to market — a sharp team can launch a conversion-grade store in weeks, not months.
  • The app economy — subscriptions, reviews, loyalty: mature, supported, integrated.

Where WooCommerce wins

  • Total ownership — your code, your data, your hosting, your rules. No platform rent, no transaction fees beyond your gateway.
  • Content-commerce blends — editorial strategies, unusual information architecture, SEO-heavy builds where WordPress is simply the better CMS.
  • Edge cases — B2B logic, configurators, marketplaces: when requirements get weird, open source gets valuable.

The real cost comparison

Shopify's sticker price is visible: plan + apps, typically $150–600/mo for a serious store. WooCommerce's is hidden: hosting worth having, maintenance discipline, and periodic development. Across three years, mid-size stores land within 20% of each other either way — which is why we tell clients to choose on capability, not price.

The most expensive platform decision is the migration you do because you chose on blog posts instead of requirements.ALIFY commerce practice

The mistakes that actually hurt

Failing stores on both platforms share the same sins: 40 installed apps/plugins nobody owns, theme hacks upon theme hacks, no measurement, and CRO treated as a garnish instead of the meal. Sequence your spend: platform (once), build quality (always), traffic (only after conversion deserves it).

Still torn? Our rule of thumb: choose Shopify when you want commerce solved so you can focus on brand and demand; choose WooCommerce when your business model needs a platform that bends. Either way, bend it with people who've shipped both.
